Essential Sailing Skills
We offer to teach the following essential sailing skills on every trip.
(Of course if you prefer  we can develop a more rigourous training schedule to include heavy weather sailing tactics, night navigation and offshore preperations. )
Sailing:

  Points of sail and sail trim
  Use of gennaker
  Reefing and reducing sail area, heaving to
  Use of preventers (dutchman)
  Anchoring and docking under sail
  Roller furling
Maneuvering:

 
Tacking/gybing
  Docking under power, use of forward and reverse:
Navigation:

  Familiarity with charts and symbols
  Understanding and applying the "rules of the road"
  GPS navigation: DTW, SOG, CMG, VOG, Bearing etc:
  Use of handbearing compass. "Cocked hat" plot
  Plotting a course, how to adjust for tides, wind etc:
Safety:

  Daily weather forecasts, use of logbook, barometer
  Use of life jackets, jacklines, liferaft
  Radar, aquiring targets, plotting course
  Use of man-overboard pole,slings etc:
  Man-overboard recovery
  VHF radio procedures - pan pan pan and mayday
Systems:

  Engine checks: Oil, coolant, raw water strainer
  Engine start/stop procedures
  Use of heads and holding tanks
  Battery charging and monitoring
  Safe use of stove and oven, use of "sniffer"
  Use of electronics, depth, speed, wind, speed, log
Anchoring:

  How to "set" the anchor and check
  Calculating scope ratio and swing diameter
